Wife's Husband Suspicious That Australia's Deadly Fungus Suspect Contaminated Him
In a shocking turn of events, Erin Patterson, a resident of Morwell, Victoria, has been found guilty of three murders and one attempted murder. The victims include Simon Patterson's parents, Don and Gail Patterson, his aunt Heather Wilkinson, and an attempted murder on Heather's husband, Ian.
The murders were committed by lacing their beef Wellington lunch with lethal death cap mushrooms, a fungus known for its potent toxicity that can easily be mistaken for other edible varieties. The poisoning occurred in 2023.
Before these tragic events, Simon Patterson had expressed concerns about Erin's behaviour. He later told a doctor that he had come to suspect Erin might be deliberately poisoning him. Simon experienced symptoms such as heat sensation in his head, nausea, vomiting, and even fell into a coma before receiving life-saving surgery to remove a section of his bowel.
Simon's suspicions were raised during family camping trips between November 2021 and September 2022. He felt ill after eating dishes including penne bolognese pasta, chicken korma curry, and a vegetable curry wrap. Despite his concerns and documentation of food and symptoms on a spreadsheet, no poisons were ever formally detected in these incidents.
During the trial, Erin Patterson maintained that the beef-and-pastry dish was accidentally poisoned with death cap mushrooms. However, the jury found her guilty of the charges.
The trial, which lasted over two months, attracted podcasters, film crews, and true crime fans to the rural town of Morwell, Victoria. Erin Patterson will return to court on August 25 for hearings that will determine how long she spends behind bars. Her legal team has 28 days after sentencing to appeal both her criminal convictions and her sentence.
