In August 2019, Simon Sherry, a resident of Edenburt, Virginia, tragically passed away at Cavan General Hospital. The circumstances surrounding his death have raised serious concerns about patient care, hospital procedures, and accountability within the Health Service Executive (HSE) in Ireland.

Simon Sherry was initially admitted to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for medical treatment. According to reports and subsequent investigations, he was discharged prematurely or wrongfully from the facility despite ongoing serious health concerns. The specifics of his medical condition or the exact reason for his discharge have been subject to legal scrutiny, with the case highlighting failures in hospital protocol and decision-making.

Following his discharge, Simon Sherry’s health deteriorated rapidly, leading to his death. The circumstances surrounding his departure from the hospital and the subsequent decline raised questions about negligence and the adequacy of care he received.

In response to Simon Sherry’s death, his widow, Fiona Sherry, brought a wrongful death claim against the HSE. The litigation centered on allegations of negligence, improper discharge procedures, and failure to provide appropriate care. The parties eventually reached a settlement, the details of which have been kept largely confidential due to the sensitive nature of the case. However, it is understood that the settlement involved compensation to Fiona Sherry acknowledging the failings of the hospital and the HSE.

This case has led to increased scrutiny of hospital discharge policies within the HSE and calls for improved patient safety measures. It has underscored the critical importance of thorough medical evaluation before discharge and the need for clear communication with patients and families.

Court documents reveal that Simon Sherry was initially admitted to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital with significant back pain and fever. He was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and prescribed antibiotics. However, an abscess developed on his kidney due to his urosepsis, a severe urinary tract infection. Despite these serious health concerns, he was discharged from the hospital after two days, allegedly without a doctor's certification.

The alleged cause of his death was two weeks after he was wrongly discharged from Our Lady of Lourdes hospital without a doctor's certification. He developed endocarditis, an inflammation of the lining of the heart, which led to his death at Cavan General Hospital on August 23rd, 2019.

In a related development, Mr Justice Paul Coffey approved a division of €35,000 in statutory mental distress payment between members of Mr Sherry's family. A letter of apology was also sent to Mr. Sherry's family on behalf of Our Lady of Lourdes, acknowledging deficiencies in care that led to his death and apologizing.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper patient care and hospital procedures. It is hoped that the lessons learned from this case will lead to improvements in patient safety and accountability within the HSE.

Simon Sherry's medical condition was chronic urosepsis, a severe urinary tract infection, which later led to endocarditis, an inflammation of the lining of the heart, and his eventual death. His case highlighted the significance of attentive health-and-wellness measures, particularly in managing chronic diseases and ensuring proper discharge procedures from medical facilities.
