Warning signs of respiratory issues in the lungs

Lung diseases, such as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), and lung cancer are serious health concerns that require immediate attention. The symptoms of these conditions can often be vague, making it essential for individuals experiencing certain symptoms to seek medical advice.

According to Thomas Hölting, Chief Physician of the Pneumology Center at Schoen Clinic Hamburg-Eilbek, symptoms like chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and a persistent cough should be checked by a doctor. These symptoms could be indicative of COPD, a condition where the airways are narrowed and inflamed, persisting over a long period.

COPD is a common condition, particularly among the elderly, and it could be the underlying cause of breathlessness and chest tightness. Patients who experience breathlessness while climbing stairs or carrying shopping bags may find it necessary to seek medical help.

In addition to COPD, symptoms such as a persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, frequent night sweats, and discolored lips or fingers could also indicate lung diseases. In some cases, these lung diseases may be lung cancer, the second most common cancer in men and the third most common in women.

In Germany, around 57,000 people are newly diagnosed with lung cancer each year, with men being more affected than women (approximately 35,290 men and 21,930 women in 2018). Lung cancer is a dangerous disease, often already advanced by the time it is diagnosed.

Early diagnosis and treatment of COPD and lung cancer can significantly improve the patient's quality of life. Hölting advises having a cough that lasts more than four weeks checked, as it could be a sign of COPD or other lung diseases. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
