University of Duisburg-Essen Secures €5.9M for SaVeBRAIN.Kids Project to Reduce Child Hospital Admissions
The University of Duisburg-Essen's Medical Faculty has secured nearly €5.9 million in funding for the SaVeBRAIN.Kids project, led by Privatdozentin Dr. Nora Bruns. The project, supported by a consortium of institutions, aims to reduce hospital admissions for kids with mild cases of the condition by 20%.
The project, which began in September 2025 and involves nearly 1,400 children, is developing a digitally supported care model for safe monitoring of kids at home. This model includes a doctor's cockpit for structured examination and a smartphone app for parents, which reminds them to check their child's health and provides a reliable guide for monitoring symptoms.
The project is expected to reduce inpatient admissions by 20% through better support for parents and standardized data. Around €2.8 million of the funding goes directly to the scientists of the Medical Faculty, with the project set to run for 3.5 years.
The SaVeBRAIN.Kids project, led by Dr. Nora Bruns, is a significant step towards improving the care of kids with mild cases of the condition. With the support of a consortium of institutes and the funding from the Innovation Fund of the Joint Federal Committee, the project aims to reduce hospital admissions and provide better support for parents.
