Unemployment in India jumps to 3.2% in 2024, with women predominantly exiting the workforce

In 2024, India's unemployment rate rose to 3.2%, according to the latest survey data. This increase was driven by a fall in the labor force participation rate (LFPR), particularly among women, especially in rural areas.

The LFPR for women in rural areas of India declined sharply, while the unemployment rate for women in these areas saw a significant decrease. However, the unemployment rate for men in rural areas also increased slightly. The overall LFPR in rural areas dropped significantly to 59.6%.

In contrast, the unemployment rate for urban women remained unchanged, and the LFPR for urban women remained steady. The unemployment rate for urban men showed a slight increase, mirroring the trend in rural areas.

The decline in female LFPR was particularly notable in rural areas, with both male and female unemployment rates rising slightly. This suggests a continued downward trend in employment and workforce participation in rural areas of India.

The data, typically published by the Ministry of Labour and Employment of India, is often aggregated and presented by organisations like Trading Economics, which compile official statistics from Indian government sources.

It is important to note that the unemployment rate in India was 3.1% in 2023, indicating a slight increase in 2024. The women's workforce participation in India also dropped in 2024, contributing to the overall decline in LFPR.

These trends highlight the need for continued efforts to address employment and workforce participation issues, particularly in rural areas and among women in India.
