UK Unveils Moderna mRNA Vaccine Plant, Boosting Pandemic Preparedness
The UK government has unveiled plans to bolster its pharmaceutical development capabilities. The new Moderna Innovation and Technology Centre (MITC) in Oxfordshire will be the country's first onshore facility to manufacture mRNA vaccines, with the capacity to produce up to 100 million doses annually. This move aims to reinforce the UK's role as a hub for pharmaceutical development and enhance pandemic preparedness.
The Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing Fund (LSIMF) will provide 50 million GBP to support companies investing in advanced production technologies. This fund has already supported projects like SmartNEBI, led by Lusochimica S.p.A. (Menarini Group), which aims to develop a greener, more sustainable, and efficient synthesis of the pharmaceutical active ingredient nebivolol. The LSIMF aims to stimulate private investment, create high-value jobs, and accelerate the translation of research into treatments.
The new MITC is designed to rapidly produce millions of mRNA vaccine doses. It has the potential to scale up to 250 million doses in a pandemic scenario, reducing reliance on international supply chains. The centre will create highly skilled jobs and support work on mRNA vaccine technology for various diseases, further strengthening the UK's life sciences industry, which is valued at over 94 billion GBP and employs over 250,000 people.
The UK government's investment in the Moderna Innovation and Technology Centre and the Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing Fund is expected to reinforce the UK's role as a global leader in pharmaceutical development. This move will create highly skilled jobs, enhance pandemic preparedness, and support the growth of the UK's life sciences industry.
