She fought more battles than most her age, Miriam Pielhau (1975-2016) left an indelible mark on the world of German television and beyond. Known for hosting shows like "taff" and "Big Brother", she also showcased remarkable courage in her personal battle against cancer. In the spring of 2008, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she bravely fought and used her platforms to support others facing the same trial.

"Survival was my focus"

Initially, Pielhau seemed to have beaten the disease and was deemed cancer-free. Yet in March 2016, she was once again struck - this time with liver cancer. Despite the grim prognosis, her spirit remained unbroken, stating in an interview, "Dying is not an option." Even then, she prioritized her daughter Mina, born in 2012, saying, "I want to see her grow up."

Despite her own struggles, she continued to inspire others, using her words to convey hope: "We can do this." Just weeks before her untimely demise, she graced the "Leading Ladies Awards" in Vienna in the "Health" category, recognized for her cancer support work. For several years, she fought relentlessly alongside Sylvie Meis and authored two books on the subject ("Foreign Body" in 2011 and "Dr. Hope: The Story of a Real Miracle" in 2016).

Pielhau's life and impact continue to resonate years after her passing, stirring a sense of nostalgia and admiration. Even on Instagram, her followers still leave heartfelt messages, such as "I think of you, Miriam," and "You're unforgotten." One user shared, "I named my daughter after you, and I'll continue to tell her about your amazing life on earth and your angelic presence in heaven."

May 12th, the day Pielhau would have turned 50, remains a poignant reminder of the talented TV star. Various celebrities expressed their condolences in 2016, with Til Schweiger commenting, "Life isn't fair..." Pinar Atalay emphasized, "She fought so hard, it's so sad!" Comedian Oliver Kalkofe was deeply affected: "Another blow to the heart…" While model Monica Meier-Ivancan posted, "Miri, you were an angel on earth… sometimes life isn't fair."

Pielhau's best friend, evangelist Eva Imhof, recalled the sorrow of her passing a year after, saying, "I will never forget the moment I heard the sad news, sitting in my car a year ago, screaming and pounding on my steering wheel… you were always strong. Even during the darkest moments, you walked through life with a radiant smile. You are and always will be my role model."
