In a shocking incident that occurred on Sunday, 3rd August, a 2-year-old girl was discovered alive and unharmed inside a suitcase in the luggage compartment of a bus traveling from Whangarei to Auckland. The bus was making a scheduled stop in Kaiwaka when the driver noticed a moving bag and decided to investigate.
Upon opening the suitcase, the bus driver found the toddler, who was very hot but physically unscathed. The child was immediately taken to a hospital for an extensive medical assessment and has since been reported medically well.
The New Zealand police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the 27-year-old mother from Northland being arrested and charged with ill-treatment or neglect of a child. The mother, whose name has been suppressed, appeared in North Shore District Court and was remanded in custody. She is scheduled for a forensic psychiatric assessment and is due to appear in court again on Monday, 4th August.
The police allege that the mother intentionally placed the child in the suitcase, which could have resulted in suffocation, dehydration, heat exhaustion, carbon monoxide poisoning, or psychological trauma. The maximum penalty for the charge is 10 years imprisonment.
Police and Oranga Tamariki are involved in ongoing investigations to ensure the child's welfare. Further charges have not been ruled out. The police have commended the bus driver's actions for preventing a potentially worse outcome.
It's important to note that the reason why the mother locked her child in the suitcase remains unclear at this time. The child was only wearing a diaper when she was discovered.
