Thousands upon thousands of residents in Gaza are reported as critically food insecure, according to the head of aid.

Humanitarian aid is urgently needed in Gaza on a grand scale to prevent a new generation of children from living a life with no prospects, as per Cindy McCain, executive director of the World Food Programme. In a conversation with The World with Yalda Hakim, she expressed her concerns about the Israeli restrictions on aid, which were tightened before the resumption of military operations in the region.
Initially, all aid was blocked from entering Gaza. Although limited aid is now distributed through a US and Israeli-supported organization, the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry reported Palestinians being injured by Israeli fire near aid distribution sites.
"We can't afford to wait," emphasized McCain. "We need unhindered, immediate access everywhere, which we're not receiving right now." McCain stated that the WFP is in continuous contact with the Israeli government to bring back international aid deliveries. She added, "We're dealing with a generation of children that might not get a chance to live a full life because they're not getting the appropriate nutrients."
McCain explained that the WFP aims at serving over 500,000 catastrophically food-insecure individuals in Gaza. She shared her emotional connection with the situation as a mother and grandmother, expressing her concern about having to deny food to her children, a feeling she cannot imagine.
The WFP team believes that humanitarian aid distribution should be guided by principles. When asked about Hamas' involvement in aid distribution, McCain stated that she hasn't witnessed any such cases, but lacks firsthand knowledge since she hasn't been to the region personally.
Aid distribution centers in Gaza were shut on Wednesday following reports of Palestinians being killed by Israeli gunfire near one of the sites. The Israel Defense Forces claimed they only fired at suspects who ignored warnings and approached their forces, but denied firing at civilians at the aid centre.
The situation has been complicated by incidents such as the shooting of 27 Palestinians while waiting for aid, allegedly by Israeli forces.
