Third Hip Surgery Within Three Months for Ranknick
In a series of setbacks that began in June, Austria's national football coach Ralf Rangnick underwent his third ankle surgery in three months at a Bavarian specialist clinic. The surgery was performed at the Murnau trauma clinic by Dr. Johannes Gabel, who is also responsible for the successful treatment of Manchester City and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
What was initially planned as a standard operation in June turned into a series of setbacks, with a wound infection necessitating a second operation in Salzburg in July. It's not yet clear when Rangnick will be able to return to normal walking after the surgery.
Despite the health setbacks, Rangnick showed his determination by leading the training camp in early September with crutches and a golf cart on the training ground, despite severe pain. His presence, whether on foot, on crutches, or on an e-bike, is of enormous importance to the team.
In his absence, his assistants Lars Kornetka and Stefan Oesen, along with U21 coach Peter Perchtold, are managing the team's affairs. The structures established by Rangnick since 2022 are functioning smoothly in his absence.
The Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) has promised that Rangnick will resume his duties as soon as possible. The squad announcement for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Romania is on September 29, and there is growing time pressure for Rangnick to make the deadline.
The ÖFB is hopeful that Rangnick's strategic mind will be back on the touchline in the middle of World Cup qualifying, as Austria needs his guidance to navigate through the competition. The team's performance under his assistants in his absence is a testament to the strong foundations he has laid since taking over the reigns.
