The impact that DMT has on the human physique

Emma Soleil, a remarkable individual, experienced a life-changing event when she was paralyzed from the neck down while under the influence of DMT. This harrowing experience forced her to ask for help, an action that ultimately helped her overcome her struggle with asking for help in her life.

DMT, or N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, is a naturally occurring hallucinogenic drug found in various plant species. It is well known for inducing intense and short-lived psychedelic experiences. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies DMT as a Schedule 1 substance, making it illegal to buy, distribute, manufacture, or possess DMT in the United States.

The effects of DMT on the body can vary significantly depending on the type, method of ingestion, amount taken, and body composition. When consumed, DMT can cause hallucinations, an out-of-body experience, nausea, and temporary paralysis. The length of its effects depends on the ingestion method: drinking ayahuasca brew lasts up to 4 hours, smoking DMT lasts fewer than 30 minutes, while intravenous, intramuscular, intranasal, and intrarectal administration effects are currently inconclusive.

DMT is also found in plants such as ayahuasca, Phalaris, Delosperma, Acacia, Desmodium, Mimosa, Virola, and the human brain produces it in the pineal gland. However, it's important to note that people with preexisting mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia, are particularly at risk of severe effects from DMT.

While DMT can have profoundly mind-altering effects, more research is needed to explore its potential mental health benefits. It's essential to approach its use with caution. To stay safe when using DMT, it is recommended to use ayahuasca rather than powdered DMT, use DMT in a safe place with a sober person nearby, start with a very small dose, avoid using DMT with other drugs, alcohol, or medication, and avoid DMT if someone has a history of serious mental health issues.

Heavy use of DMT can cause serotonin syndrome, a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body accumulates an excessive amount of serotonin. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include agitation, hallucinations, confusion, headaches, high blood pressure, muscle coordination loss, seizures, respiratory arrest, and coma.

There are comedown effects associated with DMT, the severity of which depends mainly on the amount taken. The human body metabolizes DMT relatively quickly, but the timing may vary depending on the method of ingestion. DMT traces remain in hair samples for an unspecified duration.

In conclusion, while DMT is a powerful and intriguing substance, its use comes with significant risks, particularly for those with pre-existing mental health conditions. It's crucial to approach its use with caution, seek professional guidance, and prioritise safety above all else.
