Tense standoff ensues at Sunshine Coast childcare center, leading to a lockdown; staff and children seek refuge in a room as police intervene
In a shocking turn of events, Reubhan Mickeal Gary Ralph, a 29-year-old OnlyFans creator with a lengthy criminal history, took his own life at a Sunshine Coast childcare centre. The incident, which occurred last July, was marked by a destructive rampage that involved multiple car collisions, an ambulance, and a disturbing incident at the childcare centre itself.
Ralph's criminal background was a matter of public record, with multiple serious offenses prior to the event at the Habitat Early Learning centre on the Sunshine Coast. These included charges for stalking, weapons offenses, and drug trafficking. At the time of the incident, he was on parole.
The incident at the childcare centre began when Ralph armed himself with a sharp object and started smashing a glass door. He then loitered around the police station, photographing one woman and making lewd comments towards her. The police were alerted, and a covert officer working inside the building guided the children and staff out to safety after they had locked themselves inside a room.
During the incident, Ralph self-harmed and sustained serious injuries. The police attempted to negotiate with him before trying to remove him, which included the deployment of Tasers several times. Despite these efforts, Ralph took his own life at the scene.
The incident at the childcare centre is being treated as mental health-related. The magistrate, Matthew McLaughlin, described the allegations as 'quite chilling' and highlighted the disturbing pattern of behavior. He suggested a psychiatric report might be necessary before allowing Ralph back into the community.
It's worth noting that Ralph was a fly-in, fly-out worker and an OnlyFans content creator. He had previously been charged with stalking two women, one of whom was an employee at Maroochydore Police Station. In October 2023, he applied for bail in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court.
Habitat Early Learning went into lockdown during the incident at the Sunshine Coast childcare centre. Fortunately, no one else was injured in the incident. The community was left in shock by the events, with many expressing relief that no children were harmed.
The police prosecutor, Senior Constable Mark Burrell, told the court the case against Ralph was 'strong'. The details of the drug trafficking charges, which involved a cocaine syndicate between November 2021 and May 2022, conducting drug deliveries and debt collections from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast, are still under investigation.
Ralph's actions left women fearing for their safety. He was described as a 'menace' whose actions were a stark reminder of the need for stricter measures to protect the community from individuals with a history of crime. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the impact of untreated mental health issues and the importance of addressing the root causes of criminal behavior.
