Teen cyclist miraculously survives hit-and-run accident on his way to school, with family attributing the incident to a higher power
A tragic incident occurred on Sept. 5, when 17-year-old Benjamin Richardson was hit by a car while riding his bike to school. The accident left Benjamin with a fractured skull and mounting medical bills, causing concern for his family and the community.
First responders arrived later than expected at the scene, and witnesses reported a stranger saving Benjamin's life before they arrived. The identity of this Good Samaritan remains unknown.
Benjamin's father, James Richardson, expressed his worries about the potential financial impact of the medical bills on their future. He also expressed concern for the driver who hit his son, but believes a higher power was involved in Benjamin's survival.
James described his son as a caring individual who thinks about others before himself. Benjamin, who rides his bike to school every day, does not remember much about the day of his accident.
The community has rallied around the Richardson family, setting up a GoFundMe account to help pay for Benjamin's medical bills. Benjamin himself hopes grace finds the person who hit him.
Rock Island Police Chief Tim McCloud emphasised the importance of safety on the roads. He believes that wearing helmets is necessary for safety, but above all, he urges people to slow down and be aware of their surroundings. McCloud stated that speeding to save a few minutes is not worth risking lives.
Benjamin faces a long road to recovery, potentially including partial paralysis in his right arm and severe nerve damage in his right shoulder. Despite the challenges ahead, Benjamin remains hopeful and grateful for the support he has received.
McCloud's message is clear: prioritise safety on the roads for the sake of everyone involved. Let us all remember to slow down, wear our helmets, and be mindful of our surroundings. The Richardson family continues to receive support from the community as Benjamin begins his journey towards recovery.
