Tai Chi's Hidden Powers: Boosts Cognition, Mood, and Health
Tai chi, an ancient Chinese martial art, is gaining recognition for its potential health benefits. Recent studies suggest it may improve cognition, mood, and physical health in older adults and those with chronic conditions.
Researchers have found that tai chi may enhance cognitive function in older adults with cognitive impairment. It particularly boosts memory and executive functioning skills. Additionally, regular practice may improve mood by positively influencing the nervous system and mood-regulating hormones.
Tai chi's stress and anxiety-reducing capabilities are notable. Some studies even suggest it may surpass traditional exercise in this regard. Moreover, a 2018 randomized controlled trial led by Wong, Figueroa, Sanchez-Gonzalez, Son, Chernykh, and others discovered that tai chi training reduces symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain and fatigue, in women with the condition. This martial art may complement traditional methods for managing fibromyalgia and COPD symptoms, and help manage symptoms of other chronic diseases.
The practice of tai chi may also reduce the risk of falling in older adults. It improves balance and motor function, and reduces fear of falling. Furthermore, it may aid in improving sleep quality, particularly in older adults with sleep disorders. Lastly, tai chi may promote weight loss when practiced regularly for at least one hour, three times a week.
Tai chi, with its slow movements, deep breaths, and meditative state, offers potential physical and emotional benefits. These include reduced anxiety and depression, improved cognition, and better management of chronic disease symptoms. Further research is needed to confirm these findings, but the evidence so far is promising.
