Supreme Court's 2024-2025 Term: Key Rulings on Religion, LGBTQ+ Rights, and Healthcare
The U.S. Supreme Court has concluded its 2024-2025 term, with decisions impacting various sensitive topics. Key rulings include religious liberty, LGBTQ+ rights, and healthcare access.
In a significant case, the court unanimously ruled in favor of religious exemptions in Catholic Charities Bureau v. Wisconsin. This allows employers to opt out of contributing to state unemployment benefit programs due to religious beliefs.
The court also addressed LGBTQ+ rights and transgender issues. In Mahmoud v. Taylor, it sided with parents who wanted to opt their children out of classroom instruction containing LGBTQ+ themes due to religious objections. However, in United States v. Skrmetti, it found that a Tennessee law restricting gender transition treatments for minors did not violate the equal protection clause.
The court's 4-4 split in St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School v. Drummond blocked the establishment of the nation's first Catholic charter school. Meanwhile, it will consider challenges to Idaho and West Virginia state laws on transgender athletes in its next term.
In Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the court ruled that there is no private right to challenge a state's decision to end Planned Parenthood's participation in Medicaid programs. This decision has implications for healthcare access.
The court also limited the ability of federal judges to issue nationwide injunctions in Trump v. Casa, Inc., a case concerning birthright citizenship for children of undocumented parents.
Looking ahead, the Supreme Court will continue to address controversial issues in its 2025-2026 term. Cases involving religious liberty and equal participation of religious groups in charter school programs are on the docket. Additionally, a case challenging an investigation into pregnancy centers for allegedly providing misleading information is expected to appear before the court.
