Submerged corpses of dangerous fauna scarcely discernible in water: Carcasses of lethal creatures found on shores
In recent years, authorities in Thailand have been urging caution for tourists visiting popular vacation islands, particularly Koh Samui and Koh Pha-ngan, as these areas have been identified as having the highest incidence of fatal and near-fatal box jellyfish cases.
According to the Department of Disease Control (DDC) and a study published in the journal BMC Research Notes, there are two types of box jellyfish in Thailand. The single-tentacled species can cause muscle pain, nausea, and even lead to paranoia, but the multi-tentacled variety is far more dangerous. Victims of the multi-tentacled variety show a rash or burn mark where they were stung, causing excruciating pain. High concentrations of toxins can lead to dizziness, cardiac arrest, failure of the respiratory system, and death within 2-10 minutes.
The increase in box jellyfish in Thailand is due to several factors, including global warming, coastal waste that attracts jellyfish in search of food, and a decrease in sea turtle populations that eat jellyfish.
Authorities advise tourists to take precautions when visiting these areas. They urge local administrations to monitor beaches for jellyfish and post warning signs, particularly in high-risk areas where jellyfish protection nets should be installed and vinegar supplies provided. Tourists are also advised not to swim after rainfall and to wear protective clothing.
If a tourist is stung by a box jellyfish, they should leave the water immediately, call for help, and pour vinegar on the wound for about 30 seconds. If the victim becomes unconscious, perform CPR immediately and dial the emergency number 1669.
Unfortunately, the conditions on some vacation islands in Thailand have become dangerous. Recent reports of beachgoers pushing a refugee boat back into the sea highlight the need for increased awareness and caution.
In other news, a sea giant, 18 meters long and 40 tons heavy, has been stranded in an Italian harbor. Meanwhile, a vacationer in Italy filled up their car with fuel for 102.29 euros and shortly afterwards, the car broke down.
Elsewhere, Croatia has experienced a return of a plague after 50 years, requiring caution from vacationers.
