Spicy Seafood Dish Made with Prawns from Myanmar (Burma)
Hey there! Check out this Burmese-inspired Prawn Curry recipe that's easy as pie. This delicious dish was inspired by grandma cooking and can be found in many Burmese households.
What you'll need:* Sambal oelek - a spicy, flavorful chile paste often used in Asian cooking (Available in your market's Asian section or online.)* Yield: 4 servings* Difficulty: A breeze!* Total: 30 minutes* Active: 30 minutes
Ingredients (13)
- 1 lb prawns, peeled and deveined
- 5 garlicky cloves, chopped
- 2 tsp fish sauce
- 1.5 tsp Madras curry powder
- 1.5 tsp turmeric powder
- 0.5 tsp black pepper
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp fresh grated ginger (From a whopping 1-inch piece!)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp chile paste (Let's go with sambal oelek!)
- 1 tbsp cilantro, chopped, plus a few sprigs for garnish
- Coconut Rice, for serving (Check out how to make it in our Cooking with Grandma video!)
Instructions
- Mix prawns, half the garlic, fish sauce, curry powder, turmeric, and black pepper in a large bowl. Let it hang out for 10 minutes to let the flavors mingle.
- Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add remaining garlic and ginger and cook until they're super fragrant—about 45 seconds. Throw in the onion and cook until it's soft and translucent (about 3-4 minutes).
- Add paprika and chile paste, stirring until the onion is evenly coated.
- Arrange the prawns in one layer in the skillet, cooking them over medium-high heat until they're just opaque (around 3 minutes, flipping halfway through). Give them a good stir until they're fully cooked. (Just took a little peak for ya!) Sprinkle with cilantro and give a few more flourishes for good measure.
- Garnish with cilantro sprigs and serve with coconut rice and a side veggie dish to make your meal complete. Enjoy!
