Spicy Seafood Dish Made with Prawns from Myanmar (Burma)

Hey there! Check out this Burmese-inspired Prawn Curry recipe that's easy as pie. This delicious dish was inspired by grandma cooking and can be found in many Burmese households.

What you'll need:* Sambal oelek - a spicy, flavorful chile paste often used in Asian cooking (Available in your market's Asian section or online.)* Yield: 4 servings* Difficulty: A breeze!* Total: 30 minutes* Active: 30 minutes

Ingredients (13)

  • 1 lb prawns, peeled and deveined
  • 5 garlicky cloves, chopped
  • 2 tsp fish sauce
  • 1.5 tsp Madras curry powder
  • 1.5 tsp turmeric powder
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp fresh grated ginger (From a whopping 1-inch piece!)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp chile paste (Let's go with sambal oelek!)
  • 1 tbsp cilantro, chopped, plus a few sprigs for garnish
  • Coconut Rice, for serving (Check out how to make it in our Cooking with Grandma video!)

Instructions

  1. Mix prawns, half the garlic, fish sauce, curry powder, turmeric, and black pepper in a large bowl. Let it hang out for 10 minutes to let the flavors mingle.
  2. Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add remaining garlic and ginger and cook until they're super fragrant—about 45 seconds. Throw in the onion and cook until it's soft and translucent (about 3-4 minutes).
  3. Add paprika and chile paste, stirring until the onion is evenly coated.
  4. Arrange the prawns in one layer in the skillet, cooking them over medium-high heat until they're just opaque (around 3 minutes, flipping halfway through). Give them a good stir until they're fully cooked. (Just took a little peak for ya!) Sprinkle with cilantro and give a few more flourishes for good measure.
  5. Garnish with cilantro sprigs and serve with coconut rice and a side veggie dish to make your meal complete. Enjoy!
