Sick leave calculations during cold season: Your guide to understanding and completing pay solutions

In a significant shift towards digital transformation, Kazakhstan has introduced electronic sick leave certificates, aiming to save time, money, and prevent fraud.

Under the new system, sick leave payment is calculated by multiplying the number of sick days by the average daily wage, counting from the date of the first medical visit. The maximum monthly sick leave amount currently stands at 98,300 tenge, but is set to increase to 108,125 tenge by 2026.

The Monthly Reference Point (MRP) this year is 3,932 tenge, and is scheduled to increase to 4,325 tenge by 2026.

If a child falls ill during vacation, regardless of type, the sick leave certificate will be issued from the first day back at work, without considering the initial days of the child's illness. However, obtaining a sick leave certificate for a cold or flu during vacation is pointless, as it will not be paid and the vacation will not be extended.

It's important to note that sick leave will not be paid if one falls ill during unpaid leave or unpaid childcare leave up to three years. Additionally, a contract under a civil law agreement does not provide the benefits guaranteed by the Labor Code, including payment for sick leave.

If a doctor suspects fake illness, a sick leave certificate will not be issued. The duration of sick leave is determined by a doctor, initially for three calendar days, extendable to six if necessary, and up to 20 calendar days in total with the joint decision of the doctor and department head.

In the case of multiple jobs, sick leave benefits are paid at each place of employment. Those working in diplomatic positions abroad can expect 100% of their salary to be paid during sick leave.

Paper versions of sick leaves are set to be phased out soon, with electronic sick leaves becoming the norm from the next year. The maximum length of an electronically issued sick leave for an employee before progressive transition to electronic form is not explicitly stated in the available search results.

A notable change in the new system is that the workplace and position held will no longer be indicated in sick leave certificates. This is part of an ongoing effort to protect employee privacy and confidentiality.

This transition to electronic sick leaves is said to bring numerous benefits, including increased efficiency, reduced fraud, and cost savings. It's a step forward in modernising Kazakhstan's labour practices and ensuring a more secure and streamlined system for all employees.
