Second Avian Flu Outbreak Hits Jefferson County, Wisconsin in a Week
State and county health officials are closely monitoring farm workers in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, after a second commercial poultry flock tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) within a week. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has urged livestock owners to implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
The second case comes just days after the first confirmed outbreak in the same county. The affected flocks have been placed under quarantine to prevent the movement of birds and contain the virus. Birds in the infected flocks will be depopulated to stop the spread of the disease, ensuring no birds from these flocks enter the food system.
DATCP, along with the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, USDA, CDC, and local public health agencies, are collaborating to monitor and control the spread of HPAI. They are conducting surveillance, testing poultry, implementing biosecurity measures, providing public information, and restricting bird movement to protect public health. The risk to the general public is considered low.
The second confirmed case of avian flu in Jefferson County highlights the importance of vigilance and cooperation among local, state, and federal partners. Monitoring of farm workers exposed to the disease continues, with the goal of preventing further spread and protecting both public and animal health.
