Art Against Binge Drinking: Schleswig-Holstein Student Wins Poster Contest
Schleswig-Holstein student snags top prize in poster contest - Schleswig-Holstein student secures victory in poster contest.
Embrace color over blue – that's the message from Vivien Manzke, a 15-year-old student from Bönebüttel (Plön Circle), who's just clinched the nationwide DAK poster competition title. The DAK health insurance company announced this victory. Over 7,000 students took part in this year's prevention campaign on alcohol abuse, according to the health insurance company.
For over a decade, the DAK health insurance company has been seeking top posters against binge drinking. The federal patron for this contest is the Federal Government's Commissioner for Addiction and Drug Issues, Hendrik Streeck. The awards ceremony took place in Berlin on June 11.
Winning poster carries a message of hope
Vivien Manzke receives the main prize of €500 for her winning entry. "My poster portrays that there's a way out of alcohol addiction and that hope remains alive, especially among the youth, to pave the way to good health and a normal life," explained Vivien.
Since "Colorful Instead of Blue" launched in 2010, around 143,000 students between the ages of 12 and 17 have designed creative posters against alcohol excesses.
Andreas Storm, CEO of DAK, applauded the youthful winners for their powerful artwork while emphasizing that every treated alcohol overdose case is one too many. He hopes the campaign increases awareness about the risks associated with binge drinking.
Hospital treatment for acute alcohol abuse drops
The DAK reported that in 2023, around 9,300 children and young people aged 10 to 19 were hospitalized in Germany due to acute alcohol abuse. This represents a 19% decrease compared to the previous year, marking the lowest number of clinic treatments for acute alcohol poisoning since 2001.
The self-designed posters from "Colorful Instead of Blue" are incredibly impactful for peers, according to the Institute for Therapy and Health Research (IFT-Nord) in Kiel. In a comprehensive study, it was found that these posters created by young people strengthen their perception that alcohol consumption is harmful.
