Researcher Streeck Takes On New Role: Drug Enforcement Administrator
Federal Government Taps Virologist Streeck as Drug Commissioner
In a significant shift, the German Federal Government has appointed virologist and CDU member Hendrik Streeck as their new Drugs Commissioner. The appointment follows the proposal made by Health Minister Nina Warken.
Known for his prominent role during the Corona crisis, Streeck, 47, is a popular figure in the health sector. The professor, who joined the Bundestag in February, will look to protect children and young people from addiction, digital risks, and harmful substances, he said.
Streeck assumes the position previously held by SPD politician Burkhard Blienert. Meanwhile, CSU MP Katrin Staffler has been appointed as the new Long-Term Care Commissioner, while SPD MP Stefan Schwartze remains the Government's Patient Commissioner, a role he held during the previous legislative period.
Warken highlighted the importance of dialogue in health policy, especially with those affected, saying Streeck's medical background would help to depolarize the emotionally charged drug debate. Of particular interest this legislative period is expected to be the handling of the legalization of cannabis, with the Union and SPD planning an open-ended evaluation this fall.
Streeck has presented nuanced views on drug policy, particularly regarding cannabis legalization, acknowledging scientific evidence that it can impact brain development and increase susceptibility to mental health disorders, especially in adolescents. Nevertheless, he has also supported the principles of self-determination and proportionality, potentially favoring legalization.
Before his federal appointment, Streeck served as a Bundestag member and had a career in virology, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, where his expertise in infectious diseases and public health garnered prominence and credibility.
