Report on HOSA Week Celebrations at Hellgate High School

In November 2021, Hellgate High School hosted its annual HOSA Week, a time dedicated to raising awareness about key health issues and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. This national organisation, which empowers future health professionals, saw its members at Hellgate High School take the lead in educating their peers on a variety of topics.

The week-long event kicked off with a focus on the importance of hydration, followed by discussions on viruses and germs, emphasising the importance of handwashing, vaccination, and other preventive measures. On Tuesday, sleep was the topic of discussion, with tips for improving sleep quality shared and the significance of adequate rest for mental clarity, immune function, and emotional well-being explained.

Thursday's presentation focused on diabetes, explaining the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and highlighting the role of lifestyle choices in prevention and management. The week concluded on Friday with a session on lung health and the dangers of vaping, shedding light on the harmful effects of e-cigarettes and encouraging students to make choices that support respiratory health.

In addition to informative presentations, HOSA members hosted displays, handouts, and interactive activities throughout the week. These activities were designed to not only educate but also inspire peers. Sylvie Semanoff, a junior at Hellgate High School, expressed her admiration for the passion of the HOSA members in educating their peers.

The week also emphasised the importance of mental health awareness, nutrition and healthy eating habits, the importance of exercise, and COVID-19 safety protocols. These topics aimed to prepare students with essential health knowledge and skills, promoting a sense of community involvement among HOSA members.

As HOSA Week wraps up, students are left with a deeper understanding of the importance of making informed health choices. They were encouraged to drink enough water and swap sugary drinks for healthier options throughout the week. The HOSA chapter at Hellgate High School, through these efforts, demonstrated its dedication to making a difference in their school community.

  1. During the Q&A session on Thursday, a question about the role of CBD in managing certain medical conditions was posed, to which HOSA members provided insights based on current scientific research.
  2. To supplement the educational activities, the HOSA chapter introduced discussions on the benefits of various health-and-wellness therapies and treatments, including meditation and yoga.
  3. As part of their effort to promote holistic health, the HOSA members highlighted the significance of proper nutrition in disease prevention and overall physical development.
  4. In light of the recent advancements in medical science, the HOSA Week events aimed to foster an understanding of the latest trends in health and wellness, preparing students for their future roles as health professionals in the community.
