Memorial Service to Take Place in Essen's Market Church on World Suicide Prevention Day

On September 10, a memorial service will be held in the Market Church, Essen, at 6:30 PM, marking World Suicide Prevention Day. The event, organised by the Essen Telephone Counseling Service, its support association "FETS", and the group of "Survivors after Suicide", aims to remember those residents of Essen who took their own lives last year and their loved ones.

The program for the evening includes instrumental music, prayers, an interview with a bereaved person, and a performance by poetry slammer Franziska Gels. The global motto for this year's actions is: "Speak openly - understand actively - act societally."

Before the memorial service, members of the support association of the Essen Telephone Counseling Service e.V. (FETS) will provide information on help and prevention options from 4 PM. Peter Toussaint, chairman of FETS, states that callers to the service often feel less alone in their crisis due to conversations with the counselors.

The Essen Telephone Counseling Service's 110 volunteer counselors find that talking and listening can help prevent suicides. Last year, the service received 24,000 calls, many of which involved suicidal thoughts and intentions.

The service also offers an email, website, and a crisis app as alternatives for those who prefer writing to talking. The Crisis Compass, a crisis app, serves as a personal toolkit for tough times, featuring a diary function and personal archives. Users can pack positive thoughts, photos, memories, or songs into the Crisis Compass for their personal crisis emergency kit.

The event will see the participation of several prominent personalities, including Essen's Mayor Thomas Kufen, City Director Peter Renzel, Superintendent Marion Greve, and City Dean Jürgen Schmidt.

The Essen Telephone Counseling Service is jointly financed by the Evangelical Church Circle and the Catholic Caritas. Around fifty candles will be lit in memory of those who died by suicide in Essen last year and their loved ones.

For those in need of help or having suicidal thoughts, the Essen Telephone Counseling Service can be reached 24/7 at 0800 1110111. The service encourages anyone struggling to seek help and break down the wall of silence surrounding suicidal thoughts.
