Pupils Rescue Child from Near-Drowning Incident at School

In a heart-stopping incident at a public pool in Nordheim, Baden-Württemberg, two brave schoolchildren, Marlene Mayer (11) and Leo Kurz (12), saved a four-year-old boy from drowning.
On a mid-August day, Marlene and Leo were waiting their turn at the diving board when the young boy, unaware of the line, cut in front of them. Tragically, the boy soon found himself in distress, sinking to the bottom of the 3.85-meter deep pool.
Without hesitation, Marlene and Leo sprang into action. They descended into the water, Leo nearly four meters deep, and used a tow-in technique to pull the boy to the surface. Marlene, upon reaching the boy, squeezed water from his stomach at the pool's edge.
Their quick actions prevented a potential tragedy, and moments later, the child was able to breathe again. The two heroes' actions were praised by many, including Mayor Volker Schriek, who labelled them as "little heroes and big role models."
The duo had only recently learned the crucial move for rescuing someone from the water during a first aid course with the DLRG (German Life-Saving Association). A friend of Marlene and Leo later commented that the boy might not have seen his next birthday if they had not intervened, making the gravity of their actions clear to them.
Mayor Schriek also believes that many parents should be more aware of their responsibilities poolside. He encourages parents to be vigilant and to ensure their children follow pool rules to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
Marlene and Leo express relief that the boy survived the incident and are grateful for the skills they learned from the DLRG, which they were able to use to save a life. Their heroic actions serve as a reminder of the importance of water safety and the impact that quick thinking and bravery can have in a critical situation.
