Profitable and Eco-Friendly Farming with Swarna Gaurav: A Faba Bean Variety Rich in Nutrients and Yield
Swarna Gaurav, an improved faba bean variety, has been developed by the ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna, Bihar. This new variety is set to revolutionise faba bean cultivation, offering several advantages over traditional varieties.
Swarna Gaurav, locally known as "Bakla," is renowned for its high yield potential, making it a valuable addition to Indian agriculture. The variety matures in 120-125 days, offering a shorter maturity duration compared to many other faba bean varieties.
One of the key features of Swarna Gaurav is its adaptability to diverse agro-climatic conditions. It thrives in rainfed and irrigated conditions and is well-suited for rabi season cultivation across various agroecological zones. The variety is suitable for soil types ranging from sandy loam to clay loam with normal pH and medium fertility.
Swarna Gaurav stands out for its low tannin and phytate content, which enhances its quality traits such as seed size, nutritional content, and cooking quality. It also exhibits moderate resistance to major insect pests and fungal diseases, ensuring resilience in the face of potential threats.
Under intercropping, Swarna Gaurav yields 2.0-2.6 t/ha. When grown as a sole crop, it yields 4.0-5.0 t/ha, providing farmers with a significant yield advantage of 36% over the traditional Vikrant variety.
To ensure optimal growth and yield, proper land preparation is essential. This includes well-tilling and leveling for uniform germination. Timely irrigation significantly enhances productivity for Swarna Gaurav, with the first irrigation before flowering and the second irrigation post-podding stage. Recommended square planting (30 cm spacing) is suggested for efficient use of space and sunlight.
Crop rotation is a timely practice to break pest and disease cycles for Swarna Gaurav. Proper seed treatment before sowing and maintaining seed quality through proper drying and moisture control during storage, and pest-proof storage methods are also crucial for the variety's success.
Swarna Gaurav has been officially released by the Bihar State Varietal Release Committee for commercial cultivation, marking a significant step forward in faba bean cultivation in India. With its high yield potential, improved resistance to diseases and pests, better adaptability to diverse agro-climatic conditions, and enhanced quality traits, Swarna Gaurav is set to play a crucial role in boosting productivity and resilience in faba bean cultivation.
