Prison conditions have negatively impacted the wellbeing of Gennady Fednich
In a revealing interview with the trade union site IndustriAll, longtime leader of the independent trade union of radioelectronics industry workers, Gennady Fedynich, shared his health struggles and prison experiences.
Fedynich, who was sentenced to 9 years in prison in a trial whose details remain undisclosed, was arrested earlier, preventing a planned hernia operation in April 2022. During his imprisonment, he developed diabetes, a condition he managed to navigate with the limited resources available in the prison.
Interestingly, in prison, Fedynich primarily received information about the country and the world from state media. However, he shared that he read 'between the lines' to gather a more accurate picture of the situation.
One of the notable incidents during his imprisonment was a joke he made with the head of the operational department, suggesting the creation of a trade union organization. The head was reportedly scared by this suggestion. Fedynich clarified that it was a joke, addressing the individual as "comrade major."
Despite his health issues and the tense environment, Fedynich maintained a sense of humour. During his trial, he joked with the judge, saying "Well, your kindness knows no bounds."
Upon his release on September 11, Fedynich was immediately deported from the country. The details of his deportation were not disclosed. There is also no publicly available information about the individuals present when Fedynich was prevented from undergoing his planned abdominal surgery in April 2022.
Fedynich subscribed to the newspaper "Minskaya Pravda" and received warnings from good people in prison that he could be 'written off' as having a heart attack. However, there is no confirmation if these warnings were heeded.
As a political prisoner, Fedynich's story serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those who stand up for workers' rights in Belarus. His health struggles and experiences in prison underscore the need for justice and the protection of human rights.
