Approximately half of people employ the snooze button on their alarm clocks, especially in Germany, according to a study led by sleep researcher Rebecca Robbins from Harvard Medical School, published in "Scientific Reports." Over 21,000 users of the "Sleep Cycle" app offered data for the research, spanning about three million nights.

The study found that users activated the snooze function in nearly 56% of nights, with nearly one-half of them pressing it more than 80% of the time. On average, they slept an additional 20 minutes on these days. Overall, the average snooze frequency was 11 minutes per day across all app users.

In Sweden, people typically used the snooze button an average of 2.7 times on days when it was pressed. The frequency dropped to 2.2 times in Japan and Australia, and 2.5 times in the United States and Germany. Women used it slightly more often than men, averaging 2.5 instances compared to 2.3 for men, and it was employed more frequently on weekdays than on weekends.

To the researchers' surprise, those sleeping a maximum of five hours did not utilize the snooze button. The researchers explained that these sleep-deprived individuals strove to make the most of their limited time during the night, leaving no room for additional sleep.

Robbins cautioned that repeatedly using the snooze button could have a detrimental effect on sleep quality and overall health. The snooze button disrupts the crucial stages of sleep needed for resting, memory, and cognitive function. It is particularly harmful to the hours just before waking, which are rich in REM sleep.

Lack of sleep can lead to various health issues, including mental health disorders, heart diseases, and cognitive impairment. Sleep experts recommend aiming for seven to nine hours of sleep per night and getting out of bed immediately after the first alarm rings for uninterrupted sleep.

Therefore, adopting a consistent sleep schedule and avoiding the snooze button is crucial for maintaining good health and enhancing educational performance.
