Fire department in Segeberg district responds to slightly radioactive smoke detector
A radioactive smoke detector discovered in Hasenkrug, District of Segeberg, has prompted a significant response from the local fire department. Residents made the find during clean-up operations, and a sticker warning of radioactivity was attached to the device, according to a fire department spokesperson. Several volunteer fire departments were summoned, along with the ABC unit of the district fire department, which specializes in incidents involving hazardous materials such as radioactive, biological, and chemical substances.
Authorities cordoned off the area around the discovery site and established a decontamination station. Measurements indicated radiation levels that fell below critical thresholds. Ten individuals and one dog were assessed and displayed no signs of increased radiation exposure.
Historically, many smoke detectors—specifically the ionization type—contained a small amount of a radioactive isotope, usually americium-241 (Am-241), to detect smoke. However, due to advances in technology, safety concerns, and regulatory preferences, modern smoke detectors often do not require radioactive materials. The old smoke detector found in Segeberg was secured and turned over to the relevant authorities for disposal. The fire department operation lasted approximately three hours.
