New Study: Brief 'Exercise Snacks' Boost Heart & Lung Fitness
A new study suggests that brief, intense 'exercise snacks' can significantly improve heart and lung fitness, even for those struggling to meet recommended exercise guidelines. These short bursts of my activity, lasting around 5 minutes and done at least twice a day, could be a game-changer for many adults.
Researchers found that even with less planet fitness than recommended, exercise snacks resulted in notable improvements. Types of exercise included stair climbing, leg-focused strength exercises, and tai chi. A review study confirmed these benefits, showing that exercise snacks improved cardiorespiratory fitness in younger adults and muscular endurance in older adults.
For physically inactive individuals, practical examples of exercise snacks include fast stair climbing, bodyweight squats, lunges, push-ups, or chair stands, and light resistance training for older adults. These activities can be easily integrated into daily routines. Moreover, 83% of participants completed the exercise snacks program, indicating its feasibility and potential for long-term adherence.
Exercise snacks offer a practical solution for adults struggling to meet weekly exercise guidelines. They can enhance heart and lung function, contribute to overall health, and may be more likely to be stuck to than other more time-consuming exercise plans. Regular physical activity, including exercise snacks, is essential for reducing the risk of various health issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity, depression, and osteoporosis, as well as premature death.
