New leadership named in Petrobras for Energy Transition and Sustainability portfolio
Petrobras Appoints New Executive Director for Energy Transition and Sustainability
Brazilian oil and gas giant Petrobras has made a significant stride in its commitment to sustainability and diversity by appointing Angélica Laureano as the Executive Director of Energy Transition and Sustainability. This move marks a historic moment for the company, as the Petrobras Executive Board now consists of five women out of a total of nine members, a first in the company's history.
Laureano, with a 45-year career, 37 of which have been spent at Petrobras, brings extensive experience in Materials, Supply, Gas, and Energy to her new role. She has previously served as President of Gaspetro, a Petrobras subsidiary in partnership with Mitsui Gás S.A.
In her statement regarding the appointment, Laureano expressed her enthusiasm for leading Petrobras' energy transition efforts, stating, "[I am] committed to working with the team to drive Petrobras' decarbonization projects and ensure a healthier and more productive work environment."
The Executive Office of Energy Transition and Sustainability, established in 2023, encompasses areas including gas and energy processes, climate change, decarbonization, and renewable energy. It centralizes Petrobras' energy transition-related efforts, working with other areas of the company in researching and developing energy transition projects.
The new composition of the Executive Board is a reflection of Petrobras' emphasis on diversity and gender equity. Magda Chambriard, the Petrobras President, reaffirmed this commitment, stating, "We are committed to increasing female participation in all sectors of Petrobras, and I hope that the new composition of the Executive Board will inspire other women to aspire to leadership positions, especially in the oil and gas sector."
Petrobras' commitment to sustainability and decarbonization is evident in its various key initiatives. These include significant investments in emissions reductions and research and development, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), electrification of operations, fuel substitution, renewable fuels and circular economy in refining, the construction of a new thermal power plant, and the exploration of green hydrogen projects.
Through these efforts, Petrobras aims to achieve net-zero operational emissions by 2050, focusing on employing advanced technologies, renewable energy integration, carbon capture, and process efficiency improvements to transform its oil and gas operations to be more sustainable and aligned with global climate targets.
With this new appointment and the reaffirmation of its commitment to sustainability and diversity, Petrobras continues to lead the way in the Brazilian market, demonstrating its dedication to creating a healthier and more productive work environment while also contributing to the global fight against climate change.
