José Barcala Steps in as New FC Bayern Women's Coach

Fresh hire for Bayern Munich's female team hails from Servette Geneva FC. - New appointment announced for Servette Geneva's female coaching position.

FC Bayern Munich Women has a new boss, and it's none other than the experienced 43-year-old Spaniard, José Barcala. He'll replace Alexander Straus, who's bouncing off to Angel City FC in LA, USA. Barcala comes fresh from Swiss first division club Servette Geneva, penning a deal with Munich until June 30, 2027.

Bianca Rech, Director of Women's Football at FC Bayern, had this to say in a statement: "We believe José Barcala is a perfect fit, both personally and professionally. Our aim is to progress constantly, on and off the pitch, and to build a team that can compete on both national and international stages." The club's high-performance culture and winning mentality appealed to the new coach.

Barcala's Mission: Maintain Dominance and Build Talent

The Munich ladies secured their third consecutive league title this season, adding a cup triumph to their trophy cabinet for the first time. With Barcala at the helm, they're aiming for more national titles and want to make strides in the Champions League.

"Our ambition is to remain at the top of the Frauen-Bundesliga, improve, and get closer to winning the UEFA Women's Champions League. I'm also keen on nurturing talents within our club," Barcala stated.

Barcala tasted double success in his first year as Servette's head coach, winning the Swiss league and cup double in 2024. Prior to Servette, he racked up coaching experience in Spain, France, and Scotland. "We're delighted to welcome José Barcala as our new head coach. He matches the profile we have defined to continue our development," said Francisco De Sá Fardilha, Technical Director of Women's Football.

Before the celebrations kick off, the successful Bayern teams will be feted by Mayor Dieter Reiter. On Sunday, the teams will celebrate on the town hall balcony alongside the men's team.
