Firefighters are all about saving lives, but cars parked recklessly can make their job a whole lot harder. That's why Fire Department Director Christian Zaum in Friedrichstadt is sounding the alarm. He's tired of emergency services arriving late because of illegally parked vehicles. "It's a race against time in emergencies, and we don't need to waste time maneuvering," he says.

In a demonstration without sirens or flashing lights, it became clear how much space emergency vehicles, often over 2.5 meters wide, need. Yet, it seems many folks still believe it's no biggie if they park incorrectly. Ignorance or carelessness, however, can lead to dire consequences.

Accompanied by two members of the motorcycle squad from the traffic enforcement unit, the fire department went on a tour of the city. They didn't just show off - they issued fines to offenders and took towing measures when needed. Deputy Fire Chief Carsten Hahn added that their real aim was to educate. "Even if a car squeezes through a tight spot, a fire truck might not be able to."

If fire trucks are blocked by badly parked cars, they'll first try to drive around the obstacles and guide the emergency vehicles from different angles to the reported location. But, as Carsten Hahn points out, this takes valuable "rescue time." If they can't drive around the obstacle, they might even resort to pushing the vehicle aside. This action often results in damage to the car.

In such situations, illegal parking in a fire lane will set you back 55 euros, according to Dennis Grebe, head of the traffic enforcement unit. If the offender can't be identified, and towing is necessary, additional costs can inflate the total to at least 300 euros. Dangerous parking can also result in legal repercussions if it blocked a rescue operation and caused injury to people or damage to emergency vehicles.

In a nutshell, unrestrained parking near fire stations or emergency routes can have serious implications, both legally and for public safety. As Director Zaum rightly puts it, "It's not just about parking in the white lines - it's about allowing us to do our job and save lives." So, next time you're about to park, remember: lives might depend on it.
