Randolph Township Schools in New Jersey Embrace Comprehensive Mental Health Support

In an effort to address the growing mental health concerns among adolescents, Randolph Township Schools in New Jersey made a significant shift several years ago, focusing on mental health support for its students. This decision has led to a cultural shift within the district, resulting in a more comfortable environment for staff to address mental health issues and a better understanding of various disorders.

The district's commitment to mental health is evident in the various programs and initiatives they have implemented. One such program is the establishment of a Connections team at each building level, tasked with monitoring trends in attendance, discipline, and potential outliers indicating student crisis. This team has helped identify struggling students, many of whom were high-achieving students missing considerable time due to increased anxiety or depression.

To further support these students, a general education class was created, overseen by a counselor but taught by a general education instructor trained to meet their specific needs. This approach allows students to receive the support they need while maintaining a sense of normalcy in their academic environment.

In collaboration with organizations such as OMS Social Club and Thrive Alliance Group, the district has launched a comprehensive mental health support program for everyone. The program has saved the district significant money by reducing the number of students requiring out-of-district schools or programs.

The saved funds have been attributed to the individual programs implemented and the overall cultural change. The district has hired several full-time Thrive counselors to work closely with teachers, families, and students, and three additional full-time Thrive clinicians to guide the mental health program and provide trainings for teachers.

The mental health data is displayed on a dashboard in real-time, allowing educators and counselors to monitor at-risk students. Parents are less likely to request out-of-district placements as they perceive the district's commitment to mental health.

The mental health crisis in adolescents was noticed by school leaders before the COVID pandemic, and the district's proactive approach has proven to be effective. The district has seen a significant decrease in the number of students requiring out-of-district schools or programs, saving millions of dollars.

While traditional public school supports were not robust enough to meet the mental health needs of students, Randolph Township Schools in New Jersey have shown that a focused, comprehensive approach can make a significant difference in the lives of its students.
