Despite a recent surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, mask mandates have not returned in most US school districts. However, teachers are advised to wear masks in high-risk situations, with proper fit being crucial for effective one-way masking.

Experts recommend keeping masks handy for potential future surges or changes in policies. High-quality masks like N95s, KN95s, and KF94s offer around 90 percent protection against airborne particles, while cloth masks are less effective. Even without one-way masking, having masks ready can reduce risk.

Proper fit is key for one-way masking. A tight seal all around the mask, especially around the nose, cheeks, and chin, is essential. The CDC's knot-and-tuck method can improve the fit of surgical masks. Facial hair should also be managed to maintain a proper seal.

Only 2 percent of the nation's 500 largest school districts currently require masks. While mask mandates are not returning, teachers are encouraged to use masks in high-risk situations to protect themselves and others. The nuance in mask effectiveness and fit is often lost in the politicized debate surrounding masks.
