Machine accidentally kills factory worker at Wisconsin frozen pizza plant
Robert Cherone, a bakery manager at the Palermo's Pizza factory in West Milwaukee, tragically lost his life on Wednesday morning around 6:30am. According to reports, Cherone was crushed by a robotic machine during his shift.
First responders arrived at the scene immediately and began life-saving efforts, but it was too late. Cherone was pronounced dead at the scene. The company's spokesperson, Rebecca Schimke, confirmed the incident and stated that Palermo's is cooperating with government officials to gather facts.
Schimke also mentioned that the company will be supporting Cherone's family and next of kin, as well as offering support and counseling to Palermo's employees.
The manufacturer of the robot system involved in the accident is Fujitsu. West Milwaukee police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are currently investigating the incident. At this time, it is unclear what transpired leading up to Cherone's death.
This incident at Palermo's Pizza factory occurred more than two months after another accidental factory death. In June, Nicolas Lopez Gomez, a Guatemalan national, died in Perryville, Missouri, while cleaning a massive oven at the Gilster Marylee Cereal Plant.
It's important to note that the Gilster Marylee Cereal Plant is not related to Palermo's Pizza factory.
Palermo's began as a Milwaukee pizzeria in 1969 and started producing frozen pizza 10 years later in 1979. Today, there are three manufacturing facilities across Wisconsin to produce pizzas sold across the US. According to the company's website, Palermo's meets or surpasses all government regulatory standards for cleanliness and food safety. The company's website also states that its fully trained team ensures that all products maintain a gold standard of excellence.
The Wisconsin State AFL-CIO has also spoken out about the tragedy, expressing their condolences to Cherone's family and calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.
As the investigation continues, our thoughts are with the Cherone family and the Palermo's employees during this difficult time.
