In a comprehensive survey conducted by the National Health Mission in 2024, six major cities of Madhya Pradesh - Bhopal, Ratlam, Ujjain, Indore, Jabalpur, and Gwalior - were evaluated for dog bite cases under the National Rabies Control Programme.

The survey results revealed some striking differences in the number of dog bite cases across these cities. Ujjain topped the list, with a total of 19,949 cases, which accounted for 2.810296% of its population. Indore followed closely with 58,508 cases, making up 1.930304% of its population.

However, Bhopal, with a population of 25 lakh people, recorded the least number of dog bite cases among the six cities surveyed, at 19,285 cases, which equated to 0.81795% of its population. Ratlam, with a population of 2.6 lakh people, surprisingly ranked first in the number of dog bite cases, with 13,444 cases, or 5.16783% of its population.

The survey also included a comparison of dog bite cases in the first half of 2025. During this period, Ujjain had 2.5 cases per 1000 people, while Jabalpur had 0.15 cases per 1000 people. Bhopal, on the other hand, recorded the least number of dog bite cases, with 0.07 cases per 1000 people. Ratlam topped the list again, with 43 cases, which was 4.3% of its population. Indore came in third, with 0.16 cases per 1000 people. Gwalior had 0.12 cases per 1000 people, and Jabalpur, with a population of 15 lakh people, had 0.15 cases per 1000 people.

In 2024, Bhopal had 19,285 dog bite cases, which was 0.81795% of its population. Ratlam had 13,444 cases, which was 5.16783% of its population. Ujjain had 19,949 cases, which was 2.810296% of its population. Jabalpur had 18,176 cases, which was 1.213619% of its population. Gwalior had 25,065 cases, which was 1.611902% of its population.

While Madhya Pradesh recorded approximately 1,42,948 dog bite cases in 2024 overall, no detailed, city-level comparison for those six listed cities from 2024 to 2025 is available in the current data. For precise, updated, or city-specific figures, contacting the Madhya Pradesh health department or municipal corporations of those cities might be necessary.

It's important to note that these statistics highlight the need for continued efforts in dog population management and rabies control in these cities to ensure public health and safety.

  1. The National Health Mission survey revealed that mental health, particularly related to workplace wellness and health-and-wellness, should also be a focus in Madhya Pradesh, along with dog bite cases, considering the growing importance of these areas.
  2. To improve overall health and wellness in Madhya Pradesh, fitness-and-exercise programs, skin-care advice, and nutrition guides might be beneficial, especially in cities with high populations like Indore and Bhopal.
  3. The high incidence of dog bite cases in Ratlam points towards the need for targeted therapies-and-treatments to control the dog population in that city and prevent rabies outbreaks.
  4. Medically, it would be interesting to analyze the influence of complementary medicines such as CBD on the overall health of Madhya Pradesh residents, considering its rising popularity worldwide.
  5. As part of a comprehensive health strategy, health officials in Madhya Pradesh could consider incorporating yoga and meditation, known for their mental health benefits, into their programs to improve mental well-being across the region.
  6. Local news outlets and healthcare providers should raise awareness about the importance of good sleep hygiene and its impact on health and well-being, especially in light of the high dog bite cases in Ratlam and other cities.
  7. To increase public awareness of health and safety concerns in the region, health departments and news outlets in the six major cities surveyed could collaborate to report on skincare tips, news about essential nutrients, and updates on the status of dog population management programs and their impact on the number of dog bite cases.
