Here's the skinny on the DLRG's latest numbers: Despite their lifeguarding prowess, the DLRG (German Life-Saving Association) saw a dip in water rescue missions in Saxony-Anhalt last year, pulling 15 fewer swimmers out of the deep compared to 2021. The association disclosed this in their annual report.

Nevertheless, this year still saw an impressive 961 valiant lifeguards taking part in the life-saving dance in Saxony-Anhalt, with a grand total of 4,686 members on the team. On a national scale, these incredible volunteers mustered themselves to the rescue 1,446 times, marking the highest rescue record in decades. With the help of over 54,000 volunteers, they spared no less than 2.6 million hours to ensure water safety at lakes, rivers, and swimming pools.

But we can't ignore the chilling trend: increasingly, older individuals are finding themselves in the crosshairs of water-related fatalities. Last year, a stark 16 individuals drowned in Saxony-Anhalt, a statistic that echoes the number reported for the previous year. Interestingly, the previous year predominantly claimed victims between the ages of 31-40, while those aged 60 and up accounted for more than half of the fatalities in 2024.

The question on everyone's lips is, why? Medical experts suspect that heat and sudden plunges into cold water could stress the heart and circulatory system, potentially triggering life-threatening complications—especially in older individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Drowning hazards didn't stop at Saxony-Anhalt's borders, though. Baden-Württemberg led the pack with around 243 water rescues last year. DLRG attributes this, in part, to variations in the strength of lifesaving activities among local groups and the differing overall membership across states.

Of course, the DLRG isn't resting on their laurels. They're keen to address these escalating issues and are actively working to ramp up prevention efforts, especially for the elderly population. Offerings may include swimming lessons, water safety education, environmental modifications, and first aid training for seniors. We'll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
