Ketogenic Supplement Shows Promise in Angelman Syndrome Trial
A dietary supplement, ketogenic medical food formulation (KF), has shown promising results in a small clinical trial involving children with Angelman syndrome. Manufactured by Nutricia, the supplement is designed to mimic the effects of a ketogenic diet and was found to be safe and well-tolerated by almost all participants. The trial, conducted in four phases over 16 weeks, included 14 children. Its primary goal was to assess the supplement's tolerability, which was successfully met. Two adverse events were reported, but overall, the supplement was deemed safe. Notably, almost all participants experienced a softening in stool consistency, a positive effect often associated with ketogenic diets. The supplement contains high levels of ketones, which may explain its potential benefits. However, due to the small number of participants, the supplement's efficacy could not be determined. All 13 children who completed the study accepted and tolerated the powder formulation of the supplement. Interestingly, half of the families chose to continue using the supplement after the study concluded, suggesting they noticed improvements in their children's condition. The clinical trial of Nutricia's ketogenic medical food formulation (KF) in children with Angelman syndrome has shown promising results. The supplement was well-tolerated and may have provided benefit in some cases, with no indication of harm. While more research is needed to determine its efficacy, the trial's findings suggest that the supplement could be a useful tool in managing Angelman syndrome.
