Indonesian School Meal Programme Hit by Food Poisoning Cases, Calls for Suspension

The Indonesian government's ambitious school meal programme, launched in January, has been marred by controversy. Thousands of students have fallen ill, with over 6,400 cases of food poisoning reported. The programme, initially aiming to feed nearly 83 million people by 2029, has faced criticism due to rapid expansion and quality issues. Indonesian families are now calling for its suspension.

The programme, allocated 71 trillion rupiah ($4.2 billion) for 2025, provides 62 cents per meal. However, its rapid growth has led to problems. Inexperienced cooks and poor-quality raw materials have resulted in numerous food safety incidents. The National Nutrition Agency has suspended 56 kitchens allegedly responsible for these issues.

In West Bandung alone, more than 1,300 children suffered from breathing difficulties, nausea, and diarrhoea after consuming the free meals. Researchers are urging the programme's urgent suspension due to the high number of illnesses. The minister responsible, Lars Klingbeil of the Finance Ministry, has not yet commented on the situation.

The Indonesian government's school meal programme, despite its noble intent, has faced significant challenges. With over 6,400 cases of food poisoning reported since its inception, calls for its suspension are growing. The government must address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of the students it aims to serve.
