India's Dairy Industry Surges, Led by Women and Innovative Cooperatives
India's dairy industry, a significant contributor to the nation's economy and employment, has witnessed remarkable growth. In 2023-24, per capita milk availability surged to 471 g/day, a 48% increase over a decade. This growth is driven by a predominantly female workforce and innovative initiatives like the Rashtriya Gokul Mission.
India leads global milk production, contributing nearly 25%. In 2024-25, a staggering 55 lakh artificial inseminations were performed nationwide. The dairy sector, employing over 8 crore farmers, contributes 5% to India's GDP. Notably, women constitute nearly 70% of the dairy workforce and approximately 35% of participants in dairy cooperatives.
The NDDB Dairy Services supports 23 Milk Producer Organisations, with 16 run entirely by women. These organisations aggregate nearly 2 million milk producers across 35,000 villages. The all-women Shreeja Milk Producer Organisation received international recognition, winning the Dairy Innovation Award at the World Dairy Summit in Chicago. Over 48,000 village-level women-led dairy cooperative societies operate across India.
Milk production in India has risen 56% in the last decade, from 146.3 million tonnes to 239.3 million tonnes. The government's Rashtriya Gokul Mission aims to further enhance productivity and genetic upgradation.
