New Study Reveals Distinct Roles of Mothers and Fathers in Adolescent Social Anxiety

A groundbreaking study on the influence of parenting styles on social anxiety symptoms in adolescents has been published by researchers at the University of Georgia. The study, co-authored by Assaf Oshri, Noel Card, Morgan Muñoz, Clare Thomas, and Geoffrey Brown, provides insightful findings that highlight the unique roles of mothers and fathers in shaping their children's social anxiety development.

The research, published in the Adolescent Research Review, utilised a meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) approach to jointly estimate the unique and shared effects of maternal and paternal warm and controlling behaviours on youth social anxiety symptoms.

The study found that both mothers and fathers have robust influences on social anxiety symptoms. However, it was only maternal control that was uniquely linked to increased symptomology, while paternal control was found to be nonsignificant.

Interestingly, maternal warmth had a reduced, but unique, small association with adolescent social anxiety symptoms. This finding suggests that while a nurturing and supportive environment can have a positive impact, overly controlling behaviour may exacerbate social anxiety in adolescents.

The study's findings underscore the distinct roles of mothers and fathers in adolescent social anxiety, providing valuable insights for parents and mental health professionals alike. The research demonstrates the utility of the MASEM approach in disentangling unique parenting effects on children's development, paving the way for future studies in this area.

As social anxiety symptoms peak in adolescence, understanding the factors that contribute to their development is crucial. This study provides a significant step towards that understanding, offering a new perspective on the role of parenting in shaping adolescent social anxiety.
