Hello Fresh Warned: Listeria Risk in Ready Meals

Federal health officials have warned consumers not to eat certain Hello Fresh dinner ideas due to potential listeria contamination. The warning comes after about 1,600 people get sick each year from listeria infections, with around 260 deaths, according to the CDC.

The contaminated Hello Fresh recipes, including Hello Fresh Ready Made Meals Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta and Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey, were produced by FreshRealm and shipped directly to consumers. The listeria contamination was discovered when FreshRealm notified the USDA that the quick-frozen spinach used in the products tested positive for listeria. No illnesses have been reported in relation to the current warning, and the strain of listeria detected did not match any known outbreak.

Last month, FreshRealm confirmed that pasta used in linguine dishes sold at Walmart contained the same strain of listeria linked to an outbreak in June, which has resulted in at least four deaths and 20 illnesses. The spinach was provided by Sno Pac Foods of Caledonia, Minnesota, through their supplier, Del Mar Foods of Watsonville, California. Several additional companies, including Kroger, Giant Eagle, and Albertson's, have recalled pasta salads and other dishes made with products from Nate's Fine Foods due to potential listeria contamination. Listeria infections can cause serious illness, particularly in older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant individuals or their newborns, with symptoms including fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

Consumers are advised to check their Hello Fresh meals for the affected products and return them if found. The companies involved are cooperating with investigations, and no further illnesses have been reported. The public is urged to stay informed about food recalls and follow safety guidelines to prevent listeria infection.
