Healthy Lifestyle at 50 Adds 10+ Years to Life, Study Finds

A new study has revealed the significant impact of a healthy lifestyle on longevity and cardiovascular health. It found that men and women without key risk factors at age 50 can expect to live longer, healthier lives.

The study, led by Professor Larry Tucker and Professor Marco Taubert, analyzed data from over two million people across 39 countries. It identified five classic risk factors: high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, under- or overweight, and high cholesterol. Those without these factors at age 50 saw substantial benefits.

Men without any risk factors lived 10.6 years longer without cardiovascular disease and died 11.8 years later than those with these factors. Women fared even better, delaying cardiovascular disease by 13.3 years and living 14.5 years longer. Remarkably, even those who adopted healthier habits later in life, such as controlling blood pressure or quitting smoking between ages 55 and 60, experienced significantly longer lives free from cardiovascular disease.

The study underscores the power of a healthy lifestyle in preventing cardiovascular diseases and extending lifespan. It emphasizes that it's never too late to adopt healthier habits, as changes later in life can still yield significant benefits. Further research, including urban planning projects integrating physical activity, aims to build on these findings and enhance life expectancy.
