Grants to Assist Women-led Small Businesses During the FIFA Women's World Cup Tournament
Visa Extends Visa Player of the Match Award to Empower Women in Business for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup
Visa has announced an exciting initiative for the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, aiming to uplift women in business. The Visa Player of the Match award, traditionally given to the most outstanding player of each match, voted by fans, will now support women-owned small businesses (WSMB) with a total of $500,000 in grant funding.
The funding will be distributed across the 64 matches of the tournament, with each winning athlete having a WSMB from their home country awarded a grant. The grants will range from $5,000 for first round matches to $50,000 for the final.
This move is part of Visa's multi-year commitment to help women entrepreneurs access crucial financial resources. The initiative reflects Visa's belief in the power of action and resources to promote equity, as stated by Frank Cooper, Chief Marketing Officer of Visa.
Eight in ten women small business owners agree that participating in sports impacts a person's success in business. The top four business skills WSMB owners identified as being developed by participating in sports are strategic thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership. These skills are crucial for navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship.
Moreover, 81% of WSMB owners agree that overcoming adversity in sports prepares people to tackle the most difficult situations in business. The resilience and determination demonstrated on the pitch can translate into success in the business world.
Visa's commitment to empowering women extends beyond this initiative. As the first FIFA Women's Football Partner, the first standalone sponsor of UEFA Women's Football, and sponsor of national teams including the U.S. Soccer Federation and Mexican Football Federation, Visa has been investing in women's football for over 15 years. The company advocates for equity, inclusion, and creates meaningful connections with athletes, fans, and communities worldwide.
The grants will be awarded during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, with the winning small businesses being announced live at the athlete trophy presentation. The exact countries eligible for the 64 seed capital grants for women-led microenterprises related to the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 have not been explicitly listed, but for the related FIFA World Cup 2026, countries such as the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Morocco, Tunisia, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and New Zealand are already qualified.
The Visa Player of the Match award will not only celebrate women on the pitch but also women in business. By supporting WSMBs, Visa aims to use the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 as a platform to uplift women in business, fostering a more equitable and inclusive business landscape.
