Governor of Krasnodar aims to eradicate illicit alcohol trade within the region
In Krasnodar Krai, a popular tourist destination with around 20 million visitors last year, the fight against illegal alcohol sales is ongoing. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev has publicly emphasized the importance of this crackdown due to repeated incidents of poisoning.
Recent enforcement actions include raids and public awareness campaigns. For instance, in the Tuapse District, eight illegal trading points were discovered in just two days, along with the police. However, the measurable effectiveness of these efforts in eliminating illegal points or preventing poisoning incidents cannot be reliably assessed at this time.
In a bid to eradicate all illegal alcohol sales in the region, Veniamin Kondratyev has set a goal to eliminate these sales points entirely. The Governor's concern is shared by Roman Kurinnoy, the Head of the Department of Consumer Market and Alcohol Market Regulation in Krasnodar Krai.
Many tourists come to Krasnodar Krai to try local cuisine and Kuban wines, which are a significant part of the region's identity. Poor-quality alcohol can not only damage the economy but also tarnish the image of Kuban as a winemaking and resort region.
The dangers of poor-quality alcohol extend beyond economic concerns. At least 10 people died from poisoning by surrogate alcohol in Sochi earlier in August. This tragedy underscores the urgency of the situation.
Locals and tourists are encouraged to report any instances of illegal alcohol sales to local authorities. Sochi Mayor Andrey Proshunin reported over 360 cases of illegal alcohol trade being stopped in Sochi this year.
Over 600 trade objects were checked in Krasnodar Krai in the last three months, with only 4% of the checked objects found to be selling counterfeit alcohol. Nearly 44,000 liters of counterfeit alcohol products were seized in Sochi and are currently stored pending court decision.
