Government Health Service (ÖGD)

The Public Health Service (ÖGD) of Germany, a key pillar of healthcare provision, has undergone a significant transformation. With a new brand and communication initiative, the ÖGD aims to strengthen public trust, raise awareness of its immense social significance, and honour the people behind this vital work.

The new brand, "The ÖGD - Protects. Helps. Clarifies.", encapsulates the diverse tasks of the ÖGD, ranging from health protection and advice to health promotion. The brand emerged from the "Pact for the Public Health Service" concluded between the federal government and the states in 2020, with the aim of strengthening the ÖGD at all levels.

The PHS encompasses health administration facilities at federal, state, and local levels, with around 380 health departments in Germany providing daily contributions to the health of the population. These funds are used for various purposes, including creating additional staff in health departments, digitalization, enhancing attractiveness, and creating future-proof structures for the PHS.

To provide information about when to contact health departments, a cross-country internet presence, www.publichealthservice.de, has been implemented as a "window of the ÖGD". This platform includes an integrated postal code search to show the responsible health department directly.

In addition to this digital initiative, various advertising measures are being implemented in all 16 federal states. These measures include social media campaigns, poster actions, explanatory films, and even a commercial featuring actor Simon Gosejohann. The advertising measures in the individual federal states will start at different times, with the aim of achieving the greatest possible reach and visibility of the ÖGD throughout Germany.

The new brand aims to make the diverse tasks of the ÖGD more known and emphasize its importance in citizens' daily lives. For instance, the ÖGD is responsible for infectious disease control, hygiene, children and youth health service, dental service, supplementary vaccination offers, advisory and support services, assessments, local projects and actions, health reporting, and environmental health protection.

Dr. Johannes Nießen, Acting Director of the Federal Institute of Public Health (BIOG), highlights the diverse areas of responsibility of the ÖGD, such as infectious disease control, hygiene, environmental medicine, and children and youth health services. Katharina Schenk, Thuringia's Health Minister, emphasizes the importance of providing quick access to reliable information and direct contact opportunities with health departments.

The federal government has allocated a total of €4 billion for this purpose by December 31, 2026. This investment is aimed at creating a uniform appearance for the ÖGD across Germany, with the new brand and communication initiative serving as a testament to the commitment to strengthening the Public Health Service in Germany.
