Germany's iGaming Boom: €1.1B in 2023, But Addiction Risks Loom

The online gambling industry, or iGaming, is booming in Germany. In 2021, it generated €650 million, surging to €1.1 billion in 2023. New providers are entering the market daily, driving competition and better offers. However, the industry also faces challenges, including problematic gambling behavior and addiction risks, particularly among the under-25 age group.

The iGaming industry's growth has created job opportunities. Gross income is projected to reach €1.3 billion in 2024. This growth is attributed to the new State Treaty on Gaming in 2021, which opened the market to more providers. However, with growth comes responsibility.

Problematic gambling behavior can lead to debt, psychological strains, social withdrawal, and conflicts. To prevent this, experts advise setting clear limits for stakes and time spent, taking breaks, and educating oneself about the psychology behind gambling. Some games in iGaming also promote strategic thinking, similar to chess.

On the positive side, iGaming offers social aspects like live casinos and online poker rounds, preventing loneliness and fostering a sense of belonging. Yet, the constant availability and lower entry barriers can also increase the potential for addiction.

The iGaming industry in Germany is thriving, with significant growth and job creation. However, it's crucial to address the risks of problematic gambling behavior and addiction, particularly among the under-25 age group. By promoting responsible gaming, setting clear limits, and fostering social aspects, the industry can grow sustainably while minimizing its negative impacts.
