Germany's €11.46 Billion COVID-19 Response: Testing, Vaccines, and Social Support
The German government has spent over €11.46 billion on COVID-19 response and recovery since 2020. This includes extensive testing, protective equipment, medication, and vaccination efforts. The ministry also allocated funds for social sector measures and loss of earnings compensation.
Testing was a significant part of the response. By the end of June 2023, around 208 million tests were conducted, with 110 million being PCR tests. Vienna, despite having less than a quarter of the total population, conducted 75.6 million tests. Extensive testing accounted for more than half of the total expenditure, at €5.18 billion.
Protective equipment expenses totaled €627 million, while medication for treating COVID-19 patients cost approximately €357 million. Loss of earnings compensation for those required to self-isolate amounted to €2.44 billion. The ministry spent around €1.77 billion on COVID-19 vaccinations, administering 21.5 million vaccinations by the end of 2024.
Sewage monitoring for pandemic surveillance, a newer initiative, has cost €4.2 million since 2020. The ministry also spent €225 million on social sector measures related to the pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has placed a substantial financial burden on the German healthcare sector, with total costs exceeding €11.46 billion. Despite the significant expenditure, the government has maintained a comprehensive response, including testing, protective measures, treatment, vaccination, and social support.
