German Companies Face Motivation Crisis: Study

A recent study, the 'Intrinsic@Work Index 2025', has revealed concerning trends in employee engagement within German companies. Commissioned by Authentic Consult, the study found that a significant proportion of employees, particularly part-timers and those in large companies, struggle with employee engagement. This lack of engagement has implications for productivity, innovation, and employee well-being.

The study uncovered that 33 percent of part-time employees are unengaged, with only 17 percent displaying high intrinsic motivation. Large companies fare worse, with just 14 percent of employees highly engaged. This lack of engagement has consequences: unengaged employees are more likely to be absent due to illness and report mental overload.

Regionally, engagement varies. The east shows higher engagement levels, up to 27 percent, compared to the west, such as Baden-Württemberg with only 9 percent. Companies with high engagement, like Fretus GmbH, prioritize supportive leadership, open communication, and development opportunities. However, only 11 percent of the total workforce are both engaged and innovative, with just 15 percent of unengaged employees participating in innovation processes.

The 'Intrinsic@Work Index 2025' highlights the urgent need for German companies to address employee engagement. With only a small proportion of employees highly engaged and innovative, businesses must focus on fostering supportive work environments, active engagement, and recognition to boost productivity and innovation. The regional disparities in engagement also call for targeted initiatives to improve employee well-being and engagement across the country.
