Gang Trial Verdict in Stuttgart Results in Lengthy Imprisonment for Culprits - Victims Recounted in Wachkoma Case
In a landmark case tried by the Stuttgart Regional Court, a man was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for attempted manslaughter in October 2023. The attack, which took place around two years ago, was part of an ongoing feud in the Stuttgart area that has been ongoing since mid-2022.
The incident occurred when the man, along with three other accomplices, deliberately targeted a 31-year-old member of an opposing gang. In a chilling display of violence, the man sped towards the victim in his car, reaching a speed of 64 kilometers per hour within five seconds, before running him over.
The victim has been in a coma since the incident and, according to the judge, is unlikely to wake up. The judge also stated that the man knew and wanted his actions could result in death.
The suspect fled to Turkey the day after the attack but was arrested and extradited a year later. The four accomplices involved in the car crime in Stuttgart participated alongside a 25-year-old in attacking the victim.
According to an earlier estimate by the State Criminal Police Office, the groups involved in the conflict had more than 500 young people as supporters, accomplices, or leaders. The height of the conflict so far was the attack with a hand grenade on a mourning crowd in Altbach (district of Esslingen), resulting in at least 15 injuries.
The time spent in Turkish custody will be credited towards the still not legally binding German sentence. The man's sentence will serve as a reminder of the consequences of such violent actions and the importance of maintaining peace in society.
